| Frieder Nake
Frieder Nake is a professor of Graphic Data Processing and Interactive Systems at the
Department of Informatics, University of Bremen, Germany. His current
interests include digital media design, computational semiotics, computer
art, computers in education, and theory of informatics. Since 1996, he has
been involved with the development of hypermedia and virtual
reconstructions of buildings for museums.
He earned his doctoral degree in mathematics from the University of
Stuttgart in 1967. He then became
a postdoctoral fellow in computer art and graphics at the University of
Toronto, and an assistant professor in computer science at the University
of British Columbia, Vancouver. In 1972, he went to Bremen as a full
professor of computer science.
He began work on computer art in December 1963, and is recognized as one of
the first in the world to exhibit their computer art work in galleries (in
Nov. 1965 in Stuttgart, Germany). He had a large number of art exhibitions,
both individual and group shows, during the years from 1966 through 1972.
Later, he showed his work only ocassionally, but he lectures on art topics
and publishes in the area.
He has been a visiting professor to the University of Vienna (in 1988), to
the University of Oslo (in 1995), the University of Colorado at Boulder (in
1993 and 1998), and the University of Aarhus (2000). His publications in
recent years focus on media, semiotics, computer art, and human-computer
interaction.
