COMPUTER ARTIST AND PHYSICIST PROF. DR. HERBERT W. FRANKE, senior fellow of the ZIB in Berlin, launched a research project called "math goes art." The Konrad-Zuse-Institut für Informationstechnik Berlin (ZIB) is a German research institute working in the field of information technology. Herbert W. Franke was named as senior fellow of ZIB the year before. In this project, a virtual three dimensional world will be set up on the Internet for presentations and experiments in the field of mathematics and art. The platform used for this project is "active worlds." The so called "Z-Galaxy" will be opened to the public at the end of 2009.

NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES: EXPLORING THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION BY ORNELLA CORAZZA, MA. PhD: This fascinating book introduces the phenomenon of NDEs. Taking a strikingly original cross-cultural approach, and incorporating new medical research, it combines new theories of mind-body with brain research. It analyzes the use of ketamine to reveal how characteristics of NDEs can be chemically induced without being close to death. This evidence challenges the conventional 'survivalist hypothesis,' according to which the near death experience is a proof of the existence of an afterlife. It concludes that we need to move towards a more integrated view of embodiment, in order to understand what human life is and also what it can be.

PAVEL FLORENSKY: BEYOND VISION: Essays on the Perception of Art, ed. N. Misler, (Reaktion Books, London 2002) is a collection of essays on art by the Orthodox priest, mathematician and scientist, Pavel Florensky (1882-1937). INTERSPATIALITY & DYSTOPIA EXHIBITION: 1st - 9th November 2008; Lecture: 6th November 2008. Part of Un-built, 2008 international architecture research events, The Athens Byzantine and Christian Museum & SARCHA (School of ARCHitecture for All). You are cordially invited to Interspatiality & Dystopia lecture and exhibition by Dr Eugenia Fratzeskou. The growth of non object-centred thinking, the cosmological understanding of space as an uncontrollably changing informational substance and the expanded use of virtual environments, necessitate new strategies for developing spatial research in order to advance art and architecture. Pioneering methodologies for expanding the development of digital site-specific art through the in-depth investigation of the emerging relationships between space and digital visualisation have been the outcome of Fratzeskou’s theoretical and practical research on the new intersections between art, architecture, philosophy and computer science. Interspatiality is manifested in the creation of inter-passages between the digital and physical spaces of architecture, revealing the hidden dimensions of architectural space. The creation of inter-passages has resulted in innovative types of spatial intervention within built architectural spaces through devising new types of virtual environments and in-situ digital modelling. The existing modes of digital visualisation, site-specificity, virtual and mixed realities in art, design and science are radically challenged, as the built boundaries of architecture are 'unfolded' to reveal a paradoxical hybrid space.

LIGHT-MUSIC, SYNESTHESIA, "COLOR HEARING": annotated bibliography (Russia, 1742-2002). The Research Institute "Prometheus" (Kazan, Russia) has published recently a unique bibliography of nearly all Russian publications on synesthesia, "color hearing" and related experimental arts such as light-music, abstract musical films, inter-media compositions, etc. (compiled by scientific editor Bulat Galeyev). The bibliography covers a period of the last 260 years and includes nearly 2500 titles of books, journal articles and conference theses. All materials are arranged in chronological order so that the reader gets an opportunity to trace the dynamics of interest in the problem in different epochs. Each item is supplied with a short abstract enabling the reader to appraise the publication. The publications on light-music concern not only history and theory, but light-music technologies as well. The phenomenon of synesthesia is also presented in various aspects by the literary sources of physiological, psychological, linguistic and art study. As these works are little known in western countries, Prometheus Institute suggests a project of making an English version of the bibliography (printed and on-line) with abstracts in English to each item . The project can be realized provided sufficient financial support. We will be very grateful for any grants or donations from interested organizations. THE CLIMATE CLOCK GLOBAL INITIATIVE is seeking ideas from artist-led teams to create a major artwork entitled Climate Clock, which will measure changes in greenhouse gas levels, and be the first in a series of global projects calling attention to climate change. Climate Clock will be an instrument of long-term measurement and will collect data for 100 years. The artwork will be located in downtown San Jose, California, Silicon Valley’s city center, and will be a collaboration between an artist-led team composed of artists, international and Silicon Valley engineers and other creative professionals who are working with climate measurement and data visualization. It is anticipated that the budget for the construction of Climate Clock will be between $5 and $15 million, depending upon the scope of the final proposal. BLUE MORPH at Fringe Exhibitions, (Los Angeles, CA, March 1 - April 12, 2008). BLUE MORPH is a site-specific interactive installation that uses nanoscale images and sounds derived from the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly. Fringe is pleased to present this art-science collaboration between media artist Victoria Vesna and nanoscientist James Gimzewski. NEW PUBLICATION ON CHINESE GRAPHICS: Francesca Bray, Vera Dorofeeva-Lichtmann and Georges Métailié (eds), Graphics and text in the production of technical knowledge in China: the warp and the weft, Leiden, Brill, 2007; 743 pp. This collection challenges conventional understanding of the primacy of text in Chinese knowledge production. We discuss examples of technical graphics (tu) ranging from ancient divination boards to maps, mathemical diagrams, botanical illustrations, drawings of machines or mandalas to argue that for Chinese thinkers tu were not simply representations but rather templates for action, inseparable from text but with distinctive powers of communication.

FACULTY POSITION, DESIGN THEORIST, CLEVELAND INSTITUTE OF ART: The Cleveland Institute of Art seeks qualified applicants for a full-time faculty position as Design Theorist at the undergraduate and graduate levels. DAVID ROSENBOOM'S FUTURE TRAVEL RELEASED Long out of print in its original, 1981 LP version, Future Travel, has now been released again, re-mastered for digital media, by New World Records (80668-2) http://www.newworldrecords.org/. A new version of And Out Come the Night Ears, first introduced in 1978 is also included. One of the first albums composed almost entirely with a digital synthesizer, Future Travel, features the Touché, a pioneering, digital keyboard instrument from Buchla and Associates. Rosenboom also performs on piano, violin, percussion, and the Buchla 300 Series Electric Music Box, along with spoken texts.

POWERED BY IMAGINATION: nano-images, their history, popular appeal and ethical implications: Images play a major role in the popularisation of nanoscience and nanotechnology. COLORLIGHT MUSIC AND SYNESTHESIA: The history of colorlight music and its connection with synesthesia is described in detail in a recent publication by Jörg Jewanski and Natalia Sidler: "Farbe - Licht - Musik. Synästhesie und Farblichtmusik". The book is the result of a combined scientific-artistic project, which took place at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater, Zuerich, Switzerland. THE DESIGN | MEDIA ARTS SUMMER INSTITUTE PROGRAM 2007 is designed for high school students who are interested in exploring their creative potential by learning techniques using the most current software and working with trained and experienced instructors and professionals in the field. Students not only develop pieces that can be submitted for applications to college but also earn *one unit of college credit* for attending class. At the end of class students will have the ability to create their own online portfolio to show friends and family, as well as to use in high school and college arts admission applications. During the time students are enrolled in the D|MA Summer Institute, students will be in the newly renovated Broad Art Center building and have access to UCLA facilities, just like current undergraduate students. Students can also stay in the UCLA residence halls to fully experience campus life. Although workshops are designed to last a week, it is recommended that students enroll in all three weeks to gain as many skills as possible and incorporate work from other modules. All workshops meet every day with hands on instruction in the lab for two sessions per day, totaling in 32.5 hours of instruction. Class size is limited to 20 students. REWIND | Artists' Video in the 1970s & 1980s - a major research project to collect and preserve the most important British videoart of the 1970s and 1980s. This period saw an explosion of creativity in videoart as artists gained access to video equipment and the UK was a pioneering centre of vibrant, though disparate, independent film and video activity. Sadly much the work was not properly preserved or archived, and as a result, little of it has been exhibited or seen in any context over the intervening decades. FACULTY IN 2D ANIMATION, Department of Film, Video, and New Media The Department of Film, Video, and New Media at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago seeks an innovative animation artist for a one-year full-time visiting artist position. The ideal candidate is able to teach traditional and digital 2D animation as an art form, both technically and aesthetically. EDUARDO KAC: TELEPRESENCE AND BIO ART The texts collected in Telepresence & Bio Art were written and published by Eduardo Kac between 1991 and 2002. In this period the artist further developed his innovative telepresence art, expanding it into uncharted areas such interspecies communication and microchip implants, and explored unprecedented possibilities with his bio art, notably with an ongoing suite of transgenic works. One of his best known works is "GFP Bunny", which addresses the multiple implications of creating a new animal and integrating it into society. THE INTERFACE CULTURE MASTER STUDY PROGRAM at the Linz University of Art and Design in Austria was founded in 2004 by Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau. The program teaches students of human-machine interaction to develop innovative interfaces that harness new interface technologies at the confluence of art, research, application and design, and to investigate the cultural and social possibilities of implementing them. The two-year master's degree study concentrates on project-oriented and theory-based training combining the development of projects and prototypes with scholarly publication. DESIGN + TECHNOLOGY SALON AT SFAI. "SMART METAL" SCULPTURES BY ETIENNE KRÄHENBÜHL AT SWISSNEX The first North American exhibit by Etienne Krähenbühl "The shape of memory" will show at swissnex, March 23rd to April 22nd. The extraordinary "smart metal" sculptures instill a sense of wonder as they challenge our perceptions of memory, time and weightlessness. Krähenbühl collaborates closely with Rolf Gotthardt, a physicist at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne [http://www.epfl.ch]. The two Swiss personalities will be present for an opening reception March 23, 6:00 pm at swissnex. The exhibit also presents a sound and video installation by Swiss-American composer Emile Ellberger, illustrating further the idea of memory and time in the sculptures. RARELY SEEN THOMAS WILFRED LUMIA COMPOSITIONS. Three of the rarely-seen Lumia compositions by Thomas Wilfred [a Leonardo Pioneer] are on view as part of the "Visual Music" exhibit at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, until Sept. 11, 2005 [http://www.hirshhorn.org].   Included is one of his masterpieces, the very large work commissioned by the Clairol Corporation, "Study in Depth," Opus 152, 1959.  Further information, including "animations" of two of the works in the exhibit, may be seen at [http://www.lumia-wilfred.org]. Also, until Sept. 25, 2005, at the Tate/Liverpool "Summer of Love" exhibit is "Lucatta," Opus 162, 1968, Wilfred's last composition. The "Summer of Love" exhibit travels to the Frankfurt Schirnhalle in early Nov. 2005 and to the Vienna Kunsthalle in the spring of 2006. The Center for Art and Media Technology (ZKM), in Karlsruhe, Germany, is scheduled to have Wilfred's "Multidimensional," Opus 79, 1932, and "Untitled," Opus 161, 1965/66, in an exhibit opening Nov. 18, 2005.

BIBLIOGRAPHY OF RUSSIAN PUBLICATIONS ON SYNESTHESIA. The research institute Prometheus has collected a unique bibliography of nearly all Russian publications concerning synesthesia, "color hearing" and art experiments relevant to it (light-music, abstract films with music, multimedia compositions and so on). The list of publications covers the last 100-125 years and consists of nearly 3000 titles (newspaper articles are not included--only books, journal articles and conference theses). The research works on synesthesia that have been carried out in Russia (and former USSR) are little known in the West. That is why our institute is planning to issue an English version of the bibliography, supplying each item with an abstract showing its content. To realize this project (with a subsequent publication of the results in printed and/or Internet versions) we need financial support. HIGH DEFINITION STORYTELLING ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCY. HUNTER COLLEGE'S MFA PROGRAM IN INTEGRATED MEDIA ARTS. Hunter's MFA in Integrated Media Arts offers a 48-credit course of study, combining analytical seminars, interdisciplinary research, and creative workshops in writing, visual communication, and media distribution and exhibition. The program is highly selective, enrolling only 15-20 students each year. THE CENTER FOR THE REPRESENTATION OF MULTI-DIMENSIONAL INFORMATION (CROMDI) is an interdisciplinary group at the University of Utah, whose research focuses in developing new data representation architectures to facilitate rapid and accurate analysis of complex databases in real time. THE MEMNON COMPETITION: Call for Participation. A competition is being organized to design solar thermal musical instruments. Precedents include the ancient statue of Memnon that once emitted sound when warmed by the morning sun. Supporting technologies include easy-to-build thermoacoustic "singing tubes" (for self-actuating solar organs) and various thermomechanical actuators. A competition event has been proposed for the 9-12 July annual conference of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) in Denver. HYBRID IDENTITIES IN DIGITAL MEDIA: Call for papers. The forthcoming special issue of Convergence, guest-edited by Kerstin Mey and Yvonne Spielmann, intends to discuss concepts of identity under the condition of digital media, with a particular focus on the resultant examples of hybridity that either include or exclude the "other," the background culture, the cultural precedents or earlier traditions, the previous (re-mediated) and/or other media. We would like to focus on a discussion of the twofold meaning of the concept of hybridity and the further consequences of either homogeneity or heterogeneity in the hybrid. The transgenic art of Eduardo Kac does just that, raising often unanswerable questions about ethics, evolution, biogenetics, and animals' rights, to name but a few of the areas from which his work has raised controversy. At the dawn of the 21st century, Kac shocked the world, first with a groundbreaking net installation entitled Genesis, and then with Alba, his fluorescent, genetically engineered rabbit. From his first experiments online in the mid-1980s to his current convergence of the digital and the biological, in The Eighth Day installation Kac has always investigated the philosophical and political dimensions of communication processes. Equally concerned with the aesthetic and the social aspects of verbal and nonverbal interaction, Kac has examined linguistic systems, dialogic exchanges, and interspecies communication, combining robotics and networking to explore the fluidity of subject positions in the postdigital world.

EXPERIMENTAL ART WITH NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES.
