Jessica Matthews Wins Frank J. Malina Oundle Art-Science Award

We are pleased to announce that the 2009 Frank J Malina Oundle School Art-Science Award has been given to JESSICA MATHEWS for her innovative work making computer-aided art work.

Jess Matthews, this years winner of the Malina Art Prize, was awarded the prize not only for her outstanding artwork but also for her interesting use of materials. She has worked on a very large and ambitious scale using cut out pieces of Multi Density Fiberboard, which all had to be cut very precisely to create the desired effect. Within the same piece of work she had to work with Adobe Photoshop to distort the perspective of her drawings to create a painting that you feel as though you are falling into. In another piece, she produced is a sculpture of a boot, with hand cut copper leaves and wire stalks that she meticulously hammered into shape. She has an extremely ‘graphic’ style of drawing which has complimented her technical ability and she has displayed the maturity, commitment and diligence one would usually expect from a more senior pupil. The award is made annually to a secondary school student at OUNDLE SCHOOL (http://www.oundleschool.org.uk) for a project connecting the contemporary arts to the sciences or new technologies.
